Harrowgate Revival is a new modern mixed-use building in Philadelphia. The goal of the project was to challenge the concept of a box and how its division could create a harmonious community with residential living. The functional core is designed to optimize structure, space, and technology to allow the perimeter to be as open to light, air, and view as possible. The optimization of the functional core allows for future flexibility as a “long life, loose-fit building.” The open plan space created less walls and more opportunity for light. The commercial spaces on the ground floor help to bring activity, life, and safety to the street.
Situated on the same block as another residential project, there is a common walk space behind the building for outdoor gatherings and safely walk to and from the secure parking lot. The color screams to the older residents – “look what we can become.” Street culture on the walls, bright chairs for conversation spots, bold colors to draw new residents in. Philadelphia artist Alloyius Mcilwaine was brought on to create a vibrant and street-culture inspired mural. The 150-foot wall took 10 days to paint and features vignette portraits of Philadelphia icons in art and music.
